European Championships—Dawn of a New Era

European championship events have long and prestigious histories, some dating from the late 19th century. Many became highly popular events of the early TV era, attracting millions of viewers around Europe.

However, after several World Championships were inaugurated in the 1980s, the popularity of the European events began to plateau and it became clear a new, more relevant European competition was needed.

Now, in the wake of hugely successful broadcasts of events, such as the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games, the inaugural Glasgow 2018 European Championships aims to restore and rebuild the cachet of European events by bringing together the established events for athletics, aquatics, gymnastics, cycling, rowing and triathlon, plus a new team golf team championship, into a coordinated and synergistic European multi-sport event.

Inaugural event

Held from August 2nd—12th, 2018, Glasgow will take the main role as the host city, with six sports taking place both there, and around Scotland, while other athletics events will take place in Berlin. Each sport’s governing body will organize and run their disciplines in conjunction with the host city.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is the event’s broadcast partner, and its free-to-air members—including the BBC, ARD, ZDF, and RAI—are set to broadcast more than 2,700 hours of programming across the 11-day event; the organizers are confident of attracting a cumulative audience of roughly 1 billion across Europe.

Graphics challenges

In live sport, onscreen graphics play a crucial role to inform and engage fans, and the organizers wanted to provide a sophisticated and cohesive look-and-feel across the entire Championships. The organizers worked with Avid to create a solution that could not only offer a high-quality 3D graphics platform, but would also be able to work alongside multiple timing-, scoring- and results-partners (TSR), the EBU, and the Host Cities to integrate graphics and live-data systems smoothly.

With the combination of the Avid Maestro real-time data-driven graphics platform, plus Avid’s unparalleled experience working with multiple partners to provide broadcast solutions for major global sporting events, Avid is proud to be selected as the Official Broadcast Graphics Platform Supporter for the first European Championships.

Complex task, smooth operation

With a range of sports and providers for this important event, the whole production had to ensure that the graphics templates were consistent.

The Avid graphics team traveled to Atos’ Madrid facility to install the Maestro infrastructure and provide a detailed training package to Atos’ graphics artists and technicians, as well as embedding one of Avid’s own Maestro designers into the team. The beauty of Maestro is its ease of use, and the graphics artists were able to pick up the functionality very quickly.

Avid will have worked with the TSR providers, and the host broadcaster to install 40+ Render Engines, enabling a Maestro graphics platform in multiple venues.

Look for updates about this exciting event, running from August 2nd through August 12th, 2018.
